Nicodemi estate extends over 38 hectares of the rolling Teramo hills of Abruzzi near the town of Notaresco. The key to the winery’s success has been adapting modern techniques to time-honored winemaking traditions on a terroir with outstanding potential.
Starting in 1970, Bruno Nicodemi converted the age-old family vineyards to the distinctive indigenous grape varieties Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, adding prime parcels to the estate as he went along. In 2000, Elena and Alessandro took over, working enthusiastically to establish the reputation of their family’s wines.
The winery’s 30 hectares of vineyards, which benefit from auspicious exposure, climate, and altitude, produce DOCG Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane, DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and DOC Trebbiano d’Abruzzo varieties. Handpicked grapes are vinified in the modern, efficient winery using a long, temperature-controlled fermentation process. The aging cellar contains both small French oak 225-liter casks and the larger, traditional 2,500-liter barrels for mature red wines, and the basement wine cellars provide the ideal temperature and humidity for aging wine to perfection.
|Nicodemi was awarded the prized Gambero Rosso “3 Bicchieri 2008” for its 2003 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane Neromoro Riserva. The notable 2005 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and 2006 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, under the Notàri label, ranked close behind with a “2 Bicchieri” award.|
